2003 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

the abs light is on and when pressing down hard on the brakes there is a clunking, groaning sound, what is it?

Have you checked the brake pads? Also, check the sensors at each wheel to make sure they are clean. I have seen oil / dirt collect on the sensor and as a result, actuate the abs system.
