heat comes out on dash one day floor next day defroster next day or where it wants to control does not matter what setting it is on

I think you are looking for a vacuum leak. The vent doors are actuated by vacuum. If there isn't enough or none, then they won't work properly. Check under the dash for leaks. Also, with the engine running, you may get lucky and hear a hissing sound from where there is a problem.
