2002 Ford Explorer V6 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 86000 miles

have the dreaded HUM, a differential problem per the shop we took to for estimate $800 - $1100 but they did not seem at all familiar with the problem. We called Ford dealer quoted ballpark $1100 without seeing vehicle. However they should be familiar with problem because according to other internet forums this is a problem with many 2002 explorers. We were warned my independent shop not to drive it far could break down, forums state this as well but indicate not a recall issue because Feds have not defined it as a safety issue.
We have no experience with either the dealership or independent shop. The Ford dealer will no doubt cost more but wonder if they are a better choice because they are familiar with shop bulletins. Forums lead me to believe that dealerships have not been without problems, having to redo repairs, fixing one thing then blaming another. Suggestion appreciated.

Hi there,

If you have access to an independent differential repairer, talk to them. As an independent operator his livelihood is dependent on happy customers, if they have been in business for a while, the chances are that they are honest and trustworthy. Dealerships do the job, but you are often just a number, I would talk to the inderpendent work shop first.
