engine temperature gauge not working?

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer XLT, I have recently bought this SUV.It will not pass emissions inspection. The engine light is on, and the temperature gauge is not working. I made a trip to my local auto parts store, and they checked the OBD code and it came up to the engine coolant sensor. I changed the sensor and the engine light is still on. Do I need to reset the computer, or could it be something else that I maybe need to check into before calling my repair man?

Have them reset the light at the parts store. It does need reset. If it comes back on after being reset, have them check it again to see if it is a different code.

Did he replace sensor or sending unit, some people get confused that there are two different thing, sensors talk to PCM, sending unit talks to instrument cluster(gages)

You can see if the coolant sensor is working by seeing the reading on the scanner, if there is a reading the cluster is bad and needs replacement. To be sure you have the correct sensor this is the location. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
