I have a Y2k Ford Explorer with 110K. After driving for about 10-15 min. I would stop at a light and hear a thumping noise. Same tempo, not very fast with about a second between thumps. After I shut off the car the thumping continues for about 15-20 seconds after the car is off. When I walk outside the car to deterime the origin is seems to be low in the engine compartment. It does not happen all the time.

Definitely not an animal.I would have smelled it. Is there an engine part other than the fan that revolved for awhile after the car is shut off? Now when I warm the car for awhile before driving, I do not hear it. It seems that after I start driving, it starts to thump.

The only part I can think of that might make noise with the engine off, is a heat shield on the catalytic converter, makes a metalic ticking type sound? If the shield welds break, they can be noisy.

I think I located the sound coming from the hose that connects to the pipe on top of the engine near the thermostat. Does that make sense?

If you are talking about the big fat one, check coolant level and the thermostat, may be hearing a boiling in there, is the fan working?
