could you please tell just how important the sway bar links are and when they should be replaced, or how dangerous it is if they are not replaced when worn? And what is the usual cost for these parts?

Sway bar links attach the sway bar to the lower control arms of the front suspension, and to the axle on the rear, either ones when broken will cause, you guessed it, too much sway! this means the car will lean too much during turning maneuvers, even slight ones. Links are very cheap, 23.00-30.00 for the set.
