1999Ford Explorer gear selector

My gear shifter is not aligning with the dash indicator. When I put the truck in park it shows the arrow lines up in the "R". When I put it in drive the arrow lines up in 2nd. How can I fix this

I recently ran into the exact same issue on my 1999 with 5.3L. First make sure that there is no issue with the transmission linkage and that everything is shifting normally. If it is only an alignment issue then there is a thumbwheel adjusment under the dash to make minor adjustments. There is a good post on www. Explorerforum. Com that walks through the adjustment with pictures. A quick search in the forum for shift drive selector indicator will turn up the thread from June 2006.
