I have a 99 explorer that recently developed a horrible smell when the AC was turned on. Now that cold weather has arrived we turned on the heat and the same smell. It smells so bad that it will gag you. We searched for an interior cabin filter thinkinking that maybe a frog or something had gotten in and died. Can you suggest what the smell might be? The smell is only present when the fan motor is turned on.

Sounds like a faulty heater core. The smell is actually anti-freeze coming through the vents. You may also notice a foggy-film on the windshield.
