1998 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 189k miles

The speedometer in my Explorer works sporadically. Sometimes bounces around, sometimes buries itself, and sometimes works fine. Driving me nuts. Any help is appreciated.

check wiring to VSS Vehicle Speed Sensor located on transmission .. if wiring is good replace the sensor
