1998 Ford Explorer O/D light

I have just buyed this SUV and earlier I never had an FORD its was always Toyota, I want to save petrol consumption by switching off O/D, kindly explain wether my ( O/D Off) light should be on in order to switch of O/D?

Shutting off the OD will use more fuel
shutting OD off is like driving in 3rd gear all the time
leave it on and the tranny will shift to a higher gears when needed

need manual CHECK IT @
