Noises problem
1998 Ford Explorer

I am hearing a noise in the front end/probably the wheel, when I drive - as the car slows down, so does the noise - if I speed up, the noise speeds as well. The sound is a low pitch, humming sound - (it sounds almost like a huge industrial fan that has just been turned off - I dont think its the fan, but that's what it sounds like).

What could this be? I was thinking it was the wheel bearing since a lot of people seem to be having this problem. It could be something else that I am overlooking.

One other question. If it is the wheel bearing, what is the worst that could happen if I dont replace it? Could this be dangerous?

Thank you.

It sounds like a wheel bearing. Does the sound change when turning?

If it is a wheel bearing, it could lock up and it will damage other parts.
