1998 Ford Explorer Mass Air Flow Sensor

How do you change or repair the Mass Air Sensor? Where exactly is it located and what is involved in changing it? My check engine light is on and when they ran a diagnostic on it it came up that: bank 1 and bank 2 are too lean, and codes PO171 and PO174came up together showing that my problem is more than likely my Mass Air Flow Sensor. I just want more info about where it is located and what needs to be done to repair it ... any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi there,

The MAF sensor is located in the air induction hose between the air filter and the manifold. Normally there are just attached with hose clamps or bolted to a flange. There is no in car repairs for these sensors, they must be tested and repaired in an instrument repair shop. If a MAF sensor is detected as being faulty there are a few on car diagnostic electrical test you can do to prove the unit good or faulty. If a faulty unit is suspected a change over sensor is the normal option for most workshops.
