Engine Performance problem
1998 Ford Explorer V8 All Wheel Drive Automatic

Engine knocks under a load - mainly when going up a hill. I have tried different fuel grades - same. Have changed plugs - same. Is there a sensor that could be going out or has gone bad. Looking for ideas before I bring it into a shop. Thanks in advance.

Could be the knock sensor not retarding the timing or the EGR valve not opening.
