1998 Ford Explorer broke down

we replaced the camshaft positioning sensor but did not retime it . would that slowly make something else go wrong to where it starts to run rough and then go clunk?

Usually it will not run or it will set a check engine light if the cam sensor is not timed correctly.So it wenk clunk, does it run still? Wil it turn over but not start or not turn over?
