1997 Ford Explorer

i took my 1997explorer in to my ford dealership to get the intake manifold gasket changed and they Hydraulic-ed the engine so now it is blowing out white smoke and will only do 40 miles an hour...they said it was like that when i brought it in to them.

my auto wrecker has an engine out of a 1998 but the guide says i will have to change over to my old intake. but he sugested that maybe it will work and i will only have to block off or leave something disconnected. he said you can normaly put a newer engine into an older one but it is harder the other way round. any ideas

thanks for the help

Hi Peter,

Before you do anything, I would like for you to pull the plugs. And pay close attention as to there condition. If any of them look wet with coolant then most likely they screwed up replacing the Intake Gasket. Usually white smoke or Steam from the exhaust indicates a blown intake gasket or a blown head gasket.

Check out the bottom of the page at the following link for plug discriptions...

Also, how was the vehicle running before you took it in?

how was it running? like a top started first time every time, would cruse at 90mph no problem and no check engine light all there was was a small leak at the front of the engine.

i talked to an independent machanic and he said if im lucky it is only the head gaskets. i asked him how he knew with out even looking at the explorer? he said after the second time you have to replace a costumers head gaskets for free you learn to remove the spark plugs and blow out the cylinders after you do an intake gasket.

one and four are dead, there is spark, the compression is down 15% but it is not leaking down everyone's best guess is they bent the 2 con rods.

conclusion if you change the head gaskets you will be able to tell it the rods are bent but there is no garrantee there is not more problems. so put in a used engine and cut your losses and don't go back to that dealership ever again.

my auto wrecker has a low milage 1998 he has some 1997's but they are high milage. so if it is just an new extra sensor that i can just plug off or leave unhooked great. but the auto wrecker book says you have to put in the 1997 intake on with no explansion why.

thanks for your help
