Transmission problem
1995 Ford Explorer Two Wheel Drive Automatic 175000 miles

I'm not sure what's wrong with my car. About 2 months ago I got stuck in snow and was trying to back up and go forward then all the sudden I tried putting the car in reverse and it wouldn't go. It made some strange noise and went nowhere. It will drive perfectily in Drive but when you put it in Reverse it doesn't do anything. Do you know what's wrong with it? Is it expensive to fix?

Thanks!

You may have broken the rear band. Make the following checks:

While driving forward from a stop, make sure that ALL FOUR gears are engaging. Count the shifts, and even manually shift it to verify. Your transmission could be shifting 1-2-4 and skipping 3rd.

While driving forward, at about 10 to 15 mph, shift into manual low (the "1" position on the shifter) and let off the gas. . You should feel the transmission shift into low gear, and the vehicle should decelerate.

If these checks pass, then the problem is in the control assembly or the linkage. If not, the problem is either the band is broken, the strut came out of position, or the rear servo has failed.

The band strut or servo can be repaired without transmission removal, but if the band is broken, the transmission has to be disassembled to repair.
