I have a 1994 Ford Explorer 4 wheel drive with 87,000 miles. I bought it January of this year. I am having a similar problem with transmission where I would put it in gear, but would not go into drive or reverse right away. This only after I start it after sitting overnight. I recently changed tires, had it aligned and oil. The very next day, I started it normally, went to store. When I came out, it would not start right away. I went to get battery checked and confirmed it needed replacing, which I did. Two days later, I started it the same way, drove for a couple miles, then all of a sudden it stalled completely. It had the similar restarting problems. Today, I drove it, went to store, then when I came out, the same difficulty in starting occurred. It does not struggle as if the battery is bad.

It sounds like a bad EEC relay. However, have you checked to see if it has spark and fuel to the engine when it doesn't start?

Let me know.
