1994 Ford Explorer Engine Stops

I have a friend who owns a 1994 explorer. Every time she goes to to a lower elevation & hot Temps, Her truck will die and she can smell gas. What might be the problem. There is 116,000 miles on it.

If she smells fuel, it sounds like she may be losing spark. Has the check engine light come on?
