1993 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

it will carnk but will not start it smells a lot like is overflowing and it backfires , it will take a long time to start, i change the gas filter and yet do not work,can u please tell me what is wrong with my Explorer

Check the spark
check and suspect coil
check it for tune up
plugs and wires
check EGR
