Engine Performance problem
1992 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

We finished a botched tranny job on our Explorer, now when we start it and my husband puts it in drive or reverse it dies and we don't know why. He has a book for it but nothing about this. He has checked for vacuum leaks, broken wires, wiring being unplugged and found nothing. What is the problem or is this just a Ford thing. Ha! Ha!
Thank you

Maybe a bad torque converter that is stuck in the locked up mode.
