hi, I have a 1991 Ford Explorer. The vehicle will start fine if it has not been used for several hours. If the vehicle is turned off, it will not turn over for about an hour or so. After sitting for about an hour, it will turn over again. I'm not sure if this is an alternator situation or not. I've changed the battery and the starter solenoid. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Does the starter work when this happens? Has the check engine light come on?

well since the vehicle won't start, i guess the starter doesn't work. however, we've tested the starter and that's not the problem.

and the check engine light does not come on

I asked if the starter was working because everyone describes things differently. Since the starter isn't cranking the engine at all, I need you to try to check something. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage to the smaller wire on the starter. You should be getting 12+ volts. If you are getting it and the starter still doesn't work, it's bad (even though I realize you replaced it). If there is no voltage or very little, move the the starter relay in the power distribution box under the hood. Make sure there is power to it.
