1991 Ford Explorer Four Wheel Drive 200000 miles

My car has a button to select the 4 wheel drive, mine has never worked. Recently my car has been making a crunching noise. My mechanic said the 4 wheel drive was engaging when i turned or hit a bump causing the noise. he tried greasing it and lubing cleaning it but the sound is still their how can i get rid of it?

Can those hubs be replaced or removed alltogether?
