Is it truth or urban legend that you can ruin a high mileage automatic transmission by changing the fluid, if it has not been changed at regular intervals. Our Expedition shows occasional signs of possible transmission problems (sluggish acceleration, hard downshifting, flashing O/D light). To my knowlege, the fluid has never been changed--and I hear from several people that it may fail completely if I do change the fluid.

There is some truth to the legend. When you replace the fluid, it has a cleaner in it which can cause old clutch plates to slip. However, that doesn't sound like your problem. If the OD light is flashing, it sounds like there is a sensor problem. I would recommend having the computer scanned to determine what is causing the light to come on.
