2003 Ford Expedition car is vibrating, and check engine lig

Our 8 year olsd turned the switch to 4L and I noticed when I was driving the car felt like it was vibrating when driving and when I would put it in park or stop at an intersection it would vibrate and sputter like it wasgoing to qiut or run out of gas. I put it in nuetral and back into 2W, however no change and the check engine light is on. My husband checked the oil ans said it was about a quart low so he topped it off. Any ideas what is wrong with it? Also is it safe to drive it like this?
