I would like to know if the timing has something to do with the exhaust turning red.

Definitely a possibility. If the timing is too advanced it will cause red hot exhaust. Could also be caused by a bad throttle position sensor (TPS).

A clogged cat is another possibility, however a cat doesnt go bad on its own. Something has failed causing the porcelain in the cat to melt. Hope this helps with ideas.
