1999 Ford Expedition clunk in left front wheel

Suspension problem
1999 Ford Expedition V8 Two Wheel Drive 100k miles

while backing up and turning steering wheel sharp to right, a loud clunk can be heard (wife's car and she says it 's getting louder....)
I have a chilton manual, believe it's balljoint related.
just would like troubleshooting tips

raise the tire off the ground, and hold the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and see if there is movement.
