What would cause what appears to be freon come out of the a/c vents?

Freon wouldn't come out the vents. It is a gas and you wouldn't see if. Are you sure it isn't coolant steam?

The smell and smoke coming out of my vents appears to be coolant steam, but my vehicle was not showing as running hot. What could cause it to smell like that?

You have a bad heater core. It is most likely only leaking a small amount, but it will cause this.

Check it and let me know what you find.
