Yes I have a 1998 expedition. As long as you leave the od off the unit will make 3 shifts fine. When you cut on the od, it will slip out of gear. You can rev the thing up and it will enage but will go right back out. This seems to happen at around 40 mph. The od light does not blink and their are no codes yet. Was told it might be the servo or the band on the od. Took pan off it was clean.
Can you advise? Lost.

Honestly, to me it sounds like the torque converter isn't locking. You will need to have a trans mechanic check that for you because there are no codes to go by.
