Our 1996 Ford Expedition has recently developed an a/c performance problem. The a/c basicly shuts down when ever I depress the gas peddle. It come right back if I stop depressing the gas peddle. What could be causing this problem.

When you say it stops, do you mean the air flow changes direction?

The air flow does change from the normal vents up to the "defrost" vents. However, the "cold" air stops.

I feel confident you are dealing with a vacuum leak. The vent doors and blend door are actuated by vacuum. If there is a leak, that is what happens. Check under the dash and hood for vacuum leaks. If you are lucky, with the engine running, you will hear a hissing sound.

Let me know what you find.
