My excursion starts sputtering and shaking when accelerating, especially when I go between 40-55 miles per hour.
what could be the problem?

Has the check engine light come on? Also, have you had the fuel pressure tested?

One (or more) of your Coil Over Plugs, is bad. Very common on the EX's. Their about $90 a piece. you'll want to take it to a shop though, they have the tooling to test which one it is. Tell them to look at the COP's as it's a common problem. Has happened to me three times. I've replaced 5 already on my V-10.

Cashworth can be right. THat is why I asked about the check engine light. A misfire should set the engine light on your engine and identify which one cylender is having the problems.
