Transmission problem
2000 Ford Excursion Four Wheel Drive Automatic 125,000 miles

I have a 2000 Ford excursion, automatic. Recently it started to shift into second gear very hard. The problem seems to only be at low speeds / slower starts. When you accelerate at a faster speed, the shift seems pretty normal.

Any ideas?

Hey COACHGILK,

This is a problem with an internal transmission servo retention spring that has broken. The transmission will need to be taking part either externally or from the pan under the valve body to remove the servo cover and replace the spring. This spring is used to slow down the engagement of the clutch pack that engages the planetary gears set for second gear.

Let me know what you find.

Best, Ken
