When I start my Ford Escort ZX2 1998 when it's cold it starts up and then immediately stalls, I turn the key and try again and it it always starts fine. All the plugs and wires are new.

It always stalls on the first attempt and always starts on the second attempt. Any ideas??

Fuel pressure regulator or failing fuel pump when you turn your ignition on do you hear your fuel pump pressurize. Next time you go to start it turn the key to the furthest setting before crancking the engine listen and wait for the fuel pressure to build and stop buzzing then try good luck

Discussion summary

Weird Starting Problem

The owner reports that a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 starts and immediately stalls on the first cold-start attempt, then starts successfully on the second attempt. The spark plugs and wires are reported new.

Reported outcome: The owner planned to try a suggestion but did not report a confirmed repair.

A reply suggested a fuel-pressure regulator or fuel-pump problem, but neither was confirmed. Starting on the second attempt describes the original symptom pattern, not a repair.
