What to check next

Diagnostic guidance. Suggested checks and possible repairs are separate from the owner's reported results.

Identify the exact engine and fuel system before following an idle-control procedure. Have the stalling diagnosed rather than treating the suggestions as confirmed failures.

Had a similar problem with an old taurus. Went to the dealer and they installed a new TPS (Throttle Position Sensor???) Valve. Seemed to help very well! No idea how to install somthing like that myself.

What year is it. carb or injection? if it is injected it may be the idle air bypass valve. if you can locate it sometime tapping on it will open it . however it will still need to be replaced .

sometimes you can clean the IAC with throttle body cleaner, then use a light lubrication on it.

Discussion summary

M reg Ford Escort

After a holiday, an M-registration Ford Escort would run only while the owner maintained engine speed and stalled at idle. Replies suggested idle-air-control or throttle-position faults. The owner planned to obtain a manual and possibly take the car to a shop.

Reported outcome: No inspection findings or repair result were reported.

A throttle-position repair on another owner's Taurus does not identify this Escort's fault. Proposed tapping, cleaning and lubrication are not a verified procedure for it.
