Engine noise?

1996 Ford Escort, 135,000 mi.

the car (engine, I believe) is making a tapping or clicking noise. Noise exists in lower gears, esp at lower rpms.
Our local mechanic said he drove it, got it warmed up, listened to it with his stethescope, and the noise 'seemed' to come from cylinder #4, a tapping. He suggested possibly a valve or rocker arm needs attention. Stated he would need to 'tear into it' to confirm/diagnose the problem.
The noise only started a few weeks ago. It's not very loud, but noticable.
Mechanic replaced the plug wires due to a misfire (also in #4), found from a check engine code.
What are your thoughts? And what kind of price to repair? # Of service hours? Part prices?

thank you.

Has your oil level been constant and have you tried any additives to increase the lubrication?

No, I havent tried anything yet- i'm gathering info/ideas.
One of the most recommended is adding 1 qt of Rislone, to quiet the thing down.
Not sure if the oil level has be 'constant', but I believe it's not been neglected or at poor levels- to my knowledge. Overall, fairly well cared for.
