Cylinder Identification Circuit failure

My vehicle is a 95 Ford Escort, 1.9L, auto trans. It has 123,000 miles. I am getting an error code of 214 (Cyl Ident Circuit failure). What exactly is this circuit, what does it do, and it is something I should worry about (ie get fixed)? :(
