2002 Ford Escort won't shift

I start up the car and it will not shift from park into any other gear. I took it to a mechanic who said that a plastic piece had broken loose and gotten stuck in the shifter, preventing it from shifting. He said he removed this piece and it would not happen again. The next day it happened again, of course. Any ideas?

it may be your neutral safty or actuator switch I would check with a different mechanic
