Transmission problem

I have a 02 Ford Escort SE(Split Port 2.0L,4cyl.w/Auto).It has 66,331 miles on it and has been taken in for reg. maintainance when sceduled or needed. Lately I've noticed that the car seems to be have a hard time accerating. The car is sluggish and even jerks when trying to accerate normally. It seemsto do better if the pedal ispushed harder to go. I've checked the trans fluidand it seems to be good. What could be causing this? Could the plugs need replacing?
