2002 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 125k miles

i drove my car for 30 miles it ran great then i stoped and turned car off. i started it and it started hard and now it sounds like a machine gun is fireing in the engine i took the valve cover off and everything is good lifters are all working and tight
