2002 Ford Escort Car Stalls when braking

I recently had the car ('02 Ford ZX2) in for Check Engine Light code P0171 - had a vacuum leak in the hose coming off the PCV Valve. This was replaced. Now, when I slow down at a red light or stop sign, the rpms drop to around 500 & it sometimes stalls out, but I have no problem starting it back up again. This only happens when I am in D or R and have the brakes on, it idles normally if I pop in N and coast to the stop.

Check the idle air control valve, you can take it off and clean the carbon out, and clean the throttle bore and plate, use only ford approved cleaner, they coat thier throttle assemblies with teflon. If this helps a bit you may need a new one...be careful when actually seperating it so ro don't destroy the gasket!

Do you think I should replace the fuel filter first? Or try the IAC first? I am not sure when the fuel filter was replaced last.

With 80,000 if feul filter hasn't been changed, it's past time to do so!
Have a look in the throttle body, is it black? Clean it with Ford approved cleaner. Ford coats thier throttles with teflon, so don't use just any old cleaner...

I have the same car, make year and model. I purchased mine at about 50,000 miles. It currently has nearly 100,000. I had the identical problem with the hose to the PCV valve. My car also stalled out when I came to a stop, it ended up being the oxygen sensor. Get them to check your EGR as well. As for your fuel filter, I am surprised the car will still start. You have to replace it every 15,000 miles, along with the PCV valve. Make sure you get your transmission flushed every 20,000 miles, and get them to change the transmission belt and gasket. If you don't I promise that will be the next thing that goes out and it won't be as cheap as that hose. If you get the new fuel filter you will notice a drastic change in the performance of your car, as well as 34mpg highway.

cleaned out the IAC & Throttle plate, changed fuel filter & runs fine now, no more stalling. The tranny fluid was just replaced/serviced @ about 74K miles, so it's fine for now. Next in the list is replacing the motor mounts and the timing belt (including tensioners/pulleys, and prob. the water pump)
