Engine Performance problem
2002 Ford Escort Front Wheel Drive Automatic 87,000 miles

My '02 Escort is stalling at odd intervals for no apparent reason. I will be at a traffic light and after a period of normal idling, the idle will begin to cut back and the car eventually stalls. I have to restart the car and then it runs alright. When the idle starts to cut back I can keep the car from stalling by giving it a little gas. (That's hard to do at a light because I have to remember to put the car in neutral and then back in drive when it's time to go.) The stalling does not happen all the time and it is not tied to anything in particular. Rain, damp, stoping on hills, warmed up or not warmed up - all seem to make no difference. It just stalls when it feels like it.

No check engine light. New plugs about 2 months ago. New oil filter 3 months ago. Don't know when it had a tune-up last. Ran a couple of bottles of injector/fuel system cleaner 3 months ago. Air filter is brand new. Have had no repairs in the last year or so.

Could be couple of things the idle air control solenoid IAC on throttle body or the EGR valve. Try removing and cleaning IAC pentil and passage ways.
