2001 Ford Escort Vibration When In Gear

I have a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 with 143,000 miles. My question is, when I put the vehicle into gear the entire car shakes and vibrates severely. What would cause this to occur?

I would check motor /tranny mounts
check engine operation
check timing belt
