2001 Ford Escort overheating

Air Conditioning problem
2001 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

When the A/C is on the temptuer goes up high causing the vehicle to get hot. however when the A/C is off there is no overheating, what con cause this problem?

i have changed the thermostat and the fan is working properly.

I have a couple questions. Does it run hot when you are at highway speeds or only in town driving? Next, have you checked if the cooling fans are both working when the AC is on and the temp starts getting high? Finally, have you ever had the cooling system flushed and a new thermostat?
