2001 Ford Escort major leak

Just had oil changed and it was noted that there was a major tranmission leak. What are possible causes? Have had service engine light come on when stuck in traffic a month ago. Light went off about two weeks ago. Could this be related to transmission? Had new engine put it about 18,000 miles ago.

codes will help in pin point why check engine light was on
(possible fuel cap )
