2000 Ford Escort irratic idle

this car starts fine, idle is strange, when driving, if i let of the gas it idles fast, then when stoping, it still idles high untill a complete stop, then it idles down, gets rough, and almost dies, sometimes does die. also, after driving, it will start to stutter, but go away, then come back, please help, thanks, terry

Inspect and test the idle air control motor/valve and throttle position sensor.
