2000 Ford Escort Automatic Transmission Linkage

The transmission is stuck in park. The shifter can be moved through all positions but the transmission stays in park. I watched the linkage at the transmission and the link did not move. Is the linkage a single cable link or does it have more than one linkage point? Can it be removed readily?
