1999 Ford Escort engine wont start

I have a ford escort and when I go to start the engine nothing will happen. It wont make any sounds or anything. Replaced starter and relay but noithing. I think it might be the timing belt but not sure. Anyone have any ideas on what it can be?

If its the timing belt the engine will spin but will not start
and you r saying engine does nothing and
I notice you have a standard manual tranny
check the clutch switch
its at the clutch pedal
