Code says cylinder 2 misfire. Changed plug wires. Still same after I cleared the code. Now moving on to coil. What else can I do or look for?

Misfire at no.2 cylinder should prompt you to check the sparkplug/compression/injector for that cyl.

Misfiring can be caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak spark (weak coil, bad spark plug wire), loss of compression, vacuum leaks, anything that causes an unusually lean fuel mixture (lean misfire), an EGR valve that is stuck open, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure, or even bad fuel.

The ford escort has a common problem of dropping the valve seat out of the head. A simple compression check will give you the answer.
