My engine cut out after driving over a large speed bump. It cranks over but will not fire. Can you tell me where to find the cut off switch?

CAUTION: Do not reset the Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch until the fuel system has been inspected for leaks.

To reset the IFS switch, depress the button on top of the IFS switch.

Engine Mechanical problem
1994 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I was on my way home from work and my car died and wont start.I can hear the fuel pump getting power but dont know if it could be something else with the pump. If I pump the gas pedal for alittle while I dont smell gas so it makes me beleive the engine is not getting gas for some reason.I tried to reset the fuel pump inertia switch but when I try to pry it up it wont stay up to cut the fuel off and when I try to push it down it wont go down any farther.

The gas inertia switch will pop out if set off. I would check the fuel filter first.

The first things to check when you car just up and dies and the vehicle will turn over is to make sure it is getting fuel, You say you hear the Pump turning on, good thats part 1 next would be to check the Pressure just because you hear the pump wont mean thats not the problem, so have it pressure tested along with the Pressure regulator. If all that checks out then the next would be to make sure your getting fire to the plugs. It could be just a bad coil. Post results here.

Also are there and Codes?

the funny thing is that it does start sometime
and sometimes it doesnt

Are you getting spark at the spark plugs? You can buy a cheap spark tester at an auto parts store and check that next.

We were driving and it just quit, and it said fuel shut off, we thought it was fuel line but it was tested at 40 pounds, then they did a diagnostic test and the only thing that showed up was something that was not sparking right. They replaced that but it still did not start. Do you have any ideas?

Check your inertia (fuel cut-off) switch. On 4-door it is on right side of trunk, under carpet. For 2-door it is on right side of carge area, near wheel well.
