This is a standard Ford (700) Escort Diesel van , fitted with 17 " wheels instead of the standard 13" wheels.

every time the vehicle slows a clicking noise appears , i have seeked many opinions on this problem , and was told that " due to the larger 17" wheels, it is probably putting a strain on the steering rack, which in turn is causing a kick" .

Are the above observations close to the mark , or is there another answer to this problem.

does it batter whether or not you use the brakes to slow down or if you let the vehicle does it itself?

does brakes stop the noise?

Apologies for the late reply(busy work schedule) and your reply is much appreciated , thank you very much.

The noise only seems to occur when the brakes are touched to slow the vehicle down.

drive slowly on a flat surface with lots of room and have your windows unrolled, when driving turn left and right slowly, if you hear a clicking noise i would suspect bad cv joints.

if not check the condition of the ball joints and make sure the brakes are properly installed and caliper tightened down
