1998 Ford Escort Electrical Problem?

My wife's car will turn on and idol, but when you go to put it in gear, or turn on the lights, the car dies. The gauges on the dashboard (gas, oil, speed) do not work when it is idoling like they normally do.

Any thoughts?

Check fuses and battery terminals
check /clean/replace idle air control valve

This ended up being a faulty battery cable wire. Good Call!
